It is hard to describe the immensity and pervasive nature of the complex trauma endured by those who have been in the life. It is not just the intense physical abuse and neglect, or the different habits that have to be formed to cope with a situation that seems inescapable, but, most importantly, the complex mental and emotional abuse endured by survivors, the complete disregard for their humanity, and the intentional cultivation of emotional dependence in exchange for their self-worth.
